DVIDS – News – Fort Sam Houston Community Pharmacy Moves to New Exchange
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (March 3, 2021) – Brooke Army Medical Center leaders participated in a Facebook live ribbon-cutting ceremony March 3 for the Fort Sam Houston Community Pharmacy, which relocated into the new Army and Air Force Exchange Service (exchange) in February.
“More than just a beautiful space, this move will enhance the overall experience for our beneficiaries picking up their prescriptions,” said Commanding General BAMC Brigadier General. General Shan Bagby.
In addition to all the conveniences offered by the new Exchange, customers will experience shorter wait times to have their prescriptions filled, the general said.
The new pharmacy is located at 2500 Funston Road on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the phone number remains the same: 210-295-9965.
“The Community Pharmacy‘s move to this new facility will provide customers with a one-stop shopping experience for their prescriptions and other shopping needs,” said Army Col. Stacey Causey, Chief of BAMC Pharmacy. “It will also allow us to provide the best pharmacy experience to the JBSA community.”
The new pharmacy is approximately 1,600 square feet larger than the old location and is designed to allow for better overall operational flow and more workspace for the pharmacy team to work safely.
“The pharmacy has eight prescription windows, which is a big improvement from our old location,” Causey said. “In addition, the pharmacy now has a dedicated patient counseling space to enable private one-on-one counseling. The location of the pharmacy also provides a safer and larger parking experience for customers, as the old parking lot has become heavily congested with patient traffic. »
The community pharmacy fills an average of 330 new prescriptions and 1,440 refills per day.
“That’s over 417,600 new and refill prescriptions per year,” Causey said. “These are impressive numbers and with this new space I’m sure we can do even more.”
Currently, people are required to call all BAMC pharmacies in advance for new e-prescriptions to be processed for pickup, which is being done to meet COVID-19 social distancing requirements. New and refill e-prescriptions will be processed and ready to be picked up within an hour. However, prescriptions received within one hour of pharmacy closing time will be ready for pick-up the next business day after 9:00 a.m.
On average, new prescriptions take about 30 minutes to fill. For prescription refills, customers typically wait around 2 minutes to be picked up.
“In mid-March, people will have another option to pick up their prescriptions at Main and Fort Sam PX pharmacies,” Causey said. “They will be able to pick up their prescription using the ScriptCenter Express Prescription Pickup Kiosk.”
Pharmacy staff will load the patient’s prescription into the ScriptCenter kiosk and the patient will simply log in to retrieve them.
“We are proud of our pharmacy staff,” Causey said. “They work very hard to serve our patients and we want our patients to have the best possible experience when they visit one of our pharmacies.”
