Non-profit organization forms community pharmacy to help people who cannot afford medicine

An Atlanta-based nonprofit provides lifesaving prescription drugs to people struggling to afford them.

St. Vincent de Paul Georgia Community Pharmacy opened on Monday and staff said they are actively seeking patients in need of these resources. They hope to help with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health and chronic disease.

“We want to make it easier for people to get the medications they need,” said SVdP Georgia CEO Patrick McNulty.

He said they started working on this initiative in 2017.

The need for assistance has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A study that was done just a few years ago, over 15% of Georgia residents, we now believe it’s closer to 20% of residents, are without health care, so we’re filling a gap important there,” McNulty said.

It’s a shortcoming, according to McNulty, that has left some of their clients with a difficult choice.

“Often people are faced with the difficult decision of whether or not they can afford their medication or provide for their family’s food and clothing needs,” he described.

When FOX 5 News shut down Tuesday, their pharmacist was stocking shelves with maintenance medications for customers who couldn’t afford them.

The volunteer-run pharmacy is located inside their headquarters on Chamblee Tucker Road in DeKalb County.

“People need to be able to take care of themselves so they can provide for others,” McNulty explained.

St. Vincent de Paul Georgia is focused on providing the community with access to food, clothing, financial assistance, and health care.

Although this pharmacy is in the metro Atlanta area, the plan is to help people across the state.

“We know there are needs that extend to a lot of these less populated areas,” McNulty said.

The pharmacy will serve eligible patients whose income does not exceed 200% of the federal poverty level and anyone over the age of 18 who is uninsured.
